Born in 1956 in Emden, I grew up in the East Frisian organ landscape. After the examination for organists in 1972, I played at a historical village-organ. From my earliest memories the question of why the old organs have such a better sound than the new ones occupied me. Could it be that an old secret knowledge existed which only had to be
re-discovered?
After studying organ-building in 1978-81 as an apprentice in the workshop of G. Woehl I intensified my experience in the department of musical instruments at the German Museum, Nürnberg. Then I returned to my questions by building a chest-organ for myself. Assuming the hypothesis, that there is a relationship between the vibrations of pipe-walls and the sound, I planed my wooden pipes until they were as thin as paper. For 20 years I have applied such methods and developed special techniques, which have been analyzed by
scientists.
By gathering experience through the restorations of our old organs and continually seeking the secrets of sound I am very close to my goal now: The new organ in Oldenburg (II/16) gives an example.
Last but not least, this was made possible with the help from my employees, who have supported me with never-ending ideas during my ten years of independent
organ-building.
